Road Damage In The Millions, FEMA On The Way

VPR/Patti Daniels

Transportation officials estimate the damage to state roads from this week’s flooding exceeds $3 million.

Town roads in numerous communities have also been damaged.

Governor Peter Shumlin says some of flooding is washing away work that was done less than two years ago along the same stretches of road that were destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene.

“If you go up to Roxbury, they’re sitting there as a small community with hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage to the same roads that got wiped out in Irene," Shumlin says. " If you look at many of the state roads, Route 100, Route 12, 12A, you’re getting the same kind of damage in similar areas.”

FEMA officials will visit Vermont next week to assess flood damage in several counties.

Part of the New England Central Railroad line in Roxbury was also damaged, leading to the suspension of Amtrak service. That damage is estimated at $750,000.
