Sanders Will Work To Reverse Student Interest Hike

Senator Bernie Sanders says he'll continue working to reverse a doubling of student loan rates under the Stafford student loan program.

Sanders blames congressional inaction for a doubling of the interest rate from 3.4 to 6.8 percent that took effect Monday.

All three members of Vermont's Washington delegation have been outspoken in efforts to get Congress to reauthorize the lower rate — so far without success, as the effort in the Senate was blocked by a Republican filibuster.

The rising interest rates affect 7 million students nationally and more than 19,000 Vermonters.
