Private Corrections Company Defends Transparency Record

The private company that runs three out-of-state prisons where Vermont inmates are housed is defending its record on transparency.

Corrections Corporation of America is responding to a lawsuit filed in Vermont over the issue. It says it complies fully with all applicable state open-records laws.

The American Civil Liberties Union and Prison Legal News recently filed suit over what they says was CCA's refusal to turn over information on settlements of suits brought by inmates.

A CCA statement says it should be up to the states doing business with it to decide what information is released to the public.
