The Burlington School Board has fired a high school Spanish teacher who's accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
Giovanna Yaranga has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. She awaits trial.
A lawyer for the school district tells the Burlington Free Press the board, at a closed-door hearing Tuesday, found the 44-year-old Yaranga guilty of conduct unbecoming a teacher. It also found she violated the district's sexual harassment policy.
The city initially placed Yaranga on paid administrative leave following her arrest last month. Superintendent Jeanne Collins later issued her a written notice of an intended dismissal.
Collins told The Free Press Yaranga had seven days to respond, but never contacted the district. She also did not attend Tuesday's disciplinary hearing.
