A Vermont judge has ordered R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company to pay Vermont
$8.3 million for deceptive advertising of one of its products.
The state attorney general's office sued the company for advertising its Eclipse cigarettes as a "risk reduction" product.
The attorney general said Tuesday the judge has issued an injunction banning the tobacco company from making such a claim without backing it up with studies accepted by the scientific community.
A spokesman for R.J. Reynolds says the company is disappointed with the ruling and is considering its options in the case, including its right to appeal.
