Suspicious Box In Montpelier Contained Books

VPR/Kirk Carapezza

Montpelier officials say there was apparently no bomb in a suspicious package that was exploded by a Vermont State Police robot.

City Manager William Fraser says the bomb squad robot fired an explosive device into the unattended cardboard box.

The box was discovered at the corner of Main and Langdon streets just before 3 p.m.

Fraser says city police were acting out of an abundance of caution when they called the bomb squad to investigate.

The cardboard box — about 1-foot square — was located on the sidewalk next to a bank.

The box contained books.
