Judging by the forecast, Wednesday is going to be warm and sunny across Vermont – a delightful day to be outside. And that's a good thing, because it happens to be Vermont Intergenerational Walk and Roll to School Day. This is the second year Vermont Safe Routes to School has sponsored Walk and Roll to School Day. However, this year there's a partnership with AARP and the Vermont Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance to get more community members in on the action.
Schools across Vermont have registered to participate and plan to have students and family members walk to and/or from school. Some schools are including walking activities as part of the school day. Some rural towns are bussing students to a central meeting spot and having the students all walk to school together.
The Jay-Westfield Elementary School is having students meet at 8 a.m. at the Cedar Wood Lodge to walk en masse to school. At Burlington's C.P. Smith Elementary School, students will enjoy morning and lunchtime walks at the school with some local senior citizens. The Shelburne Community School will be holding "Walking Wednesdays" throughout the month of May, with students meeting up at the Town Green at 7:30 a.m. to walk to school together.
And for those who prefer a bike to walking, mark your calendars for May 8. That's National Bike to School Day!
