Saturday Matinee presents the Metropolitan Opera production of Richard Strauss's Die Frau Ohne Schatten.
A legendary Met production directed by the late Herbert Wernicke returns for the first time in ten years in this archival recording from the fall of 2013. The fantastical genius of the Strauss score and the Hofmannsthal libretto is interpreted by conductor Vladimir Jurowski and a thrilling cast.
Anne Schwanewilms and Torsten Kerl are the otherworldly Empress and Emperor, and Johan Reuter is Barak. Christine Goerke, the rising dramatic soprano star, returns to the Met as the Dyer’s Wife, whose shadow the Empress must win to free herself from a fatal decree.
Broadcast Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1:00 p.m.
"...This was a breakthrough night at the Met for the American soprano Christine Goerke, who received an ecstatic ovation for her powerfully sung and wrenching portrayal of the hard-bitten Dyer's Wife." - The New York Times
