Summer of Soul

Summer of Soul

Flicks in the Park is presented by VTIFF and Burlington City Arts

In his acclaimed filmmaking debut, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record—based on an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture, and fashion. In the summer of 1969, Mount Morris Park (just 100 miles south of Woodstock), some of the world’s greatest musicians gathered for the Harlem Cultural Festival. Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, B.B. King, and Mavis Staples & Mahalia Jackson performed, among others. Mixing electrifying performance footage with contemporary context, Thompson creates a thrilling film, which won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.

Flicks in the Park is a program of Summer in the City, a collaboration between BCA and Love Burlington. Summer in the City 2025 is underwritten by the WaterWheel Foundation and the Pomerleau Family Foundation. Presenting Sponsors: East Rise Credit Union and AARP.
