Like most, I’m glad the toxic presidential campaign is over. I’m happy with the results. But I’m not happy with seeing people so desperately distraught about the election in Vermont and across the land. As a Vermonter by choice, I voted for Phil Scott and Donald Trump. Two polar opposites in so many ways, yet they both share the responsibility of governing come January.
My vote for Governor was an easy decision to share with friends and promote on social media. Nobody begrudged my vote for Phil. He’s a well-respected and tenured leader and I’d wager he hasn’t insulted anyone in years.
My vote for Trump was never in question, but supporting him publicly in the bluest of states had its hazards. Trump wasn’t my first choice, but in hindsight, he was the one best able to beat his formidable opponent.
In the year of the outsider, Trump’s unconventional campaign galvanized millions of Americans who feel their voices were not being heard in Washington. Many Bernie Sanders’ supporters feel the same way. Bernie and Trump were riding the same wave, just from different beaches.
The grandest of opportunities are in front of us now. Not since the 1920’s have Republicans had majorities in Congress and held the Presidency. So there are no excuses, no obstructions in place to derail a vibrant agenda of economic and social renewal. It’s time for Donald Trump to appeal to his better Angels and leave behind the pettiness of a bitter campaign.
But healing the nation won’t be easy. Our country has met every challenge for more than two centuries, but today there are forces at work on both sides stirring up division, violence and fear.
So we need to stop labeling each other with derogatory terms. It’s time to listen to those with whom we disagree. Both citizens and our leaders must rise above those trying to tear us apart.
In due time, we’ll know if Donald Trump’s vision of America is benefiting the masses. If he succeeds in making America an even greater country, he’ll be rewarded with another term. If he fails, our Republic will survive and hopefully civility will too.
