Vermont Edition Highlights: Librarian Jessamyn West And Writer Dana Walrath

Jessamyn West, left, came to the VPR Studios in Colchester in May to discuss the role libraries play in our society. Writer Dana Walrath, right, spoke to the program in May about caring for her mother after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

We continue to highlight past segments from Vermont Edition, and we're sharing again our conversations from the spring with librarian Jessamyn West and writer Dana Walrath.

Jessamyn West

In May, we were joined in the studio by "renegade librarian" Jessamyn West. She had recently received the Library Advocate of the Year Award from the Vermont Library Association, in part for her role in the selection of the new Librarian of Congress.

Find the original show page here.

VPR's Jane Lindholm spoke with West about receiving her award, as well as the role libraries play in the digital age and their significance to democracy.

Dana Walrath

Also in May, we talked with Dana Walrath, who is an artist, writer and medical anthropologist. Earlier this year, she published a graphic memoir titled Aliceheimer's: Alzheimer's Through the Looking Glass. The book details Walrath's experience of caring for her mother Alice after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Walrath shared her story with VPR's Jane Lindholm and read excerpts from her memoir. You can see images from the memoir and of Alice here on the original show page.

Broadcast Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016 at noon and 7 p.m.
