The Divestment Debate

Jim Cole

Governor Shumlin's State of the State Address has re-energized the call for divestment of fossil fuel stocks by the state pension fund.

Governor Peter Shumlin recently took his case for divestment of fossil fuel stocks to the Vermont Pension Investment Committee. This followed his original call for divestment in his State of the State address in January.

While State Treasurer Beth Pearce has been reluctant to follow his lead, she has promised to vet the proposal.

We speak with Treasurer Pearce and Robb Kidd, Sierra Club Vermont Chapter Conservation Program Manager, to look at both sides of the divestment issue.

Also on the program, we talk to Jon Copans at the Vermont Department of Public Service about new rules that are being drafted to address net metering. Two years ago, the legislature significantly increased the amount of renewable energy customers were allowed to sell back to their power companies. But those limits have already been reached and the state is working on a new plan to deal with small scale renewable energy, particularly solar, and how the financial benefits to consumers are applied. We'll learn what's in the new plan and what the Public Service Department would like to see moving forward to protect the interests of all Vermonters.
