Vermont Garden Journal: 6 Plants For Your Vegetable Garden In 2016

Even though spring is a few months away, the start of the new year is a great time to start planning your garden.

A new year means it's time to peruse the seed catalogs and look for new vegetables to start this spring. Here are some veggies I'm excited to try growing this year:

  • Escamillo peppers : A sweet, yellow pepper very similar to the Carmen sweet pepper.
  • Ellidi basil: A compact Genovese type that's slow to bolt.
  • KapoorTulsibasil: A holy basil variety that has hints of chocolate and coffee flavor and purple flowers.
  • Yellowfin zucchini: It's the first organic, powdery mildew-resistant variety of its type.
  • Attilia strawberries: A great alpine strawberry variety that sends out runners, instead of just bunching, so it's a good foodscapegroundcover to fill in a flower garden or under trees.
  • Wild Boar tomato series: From Northern California, some have blue and purple coloring and others have red and green stripes.

For this week's tip: cut back spent flower stalks from amaryllis bulbs, but continue growing the leaves and bulb in a sunny window until you can move the plant outdoors in spring.
