Bullying And Harassment: What Parents Need To Know

Parents are encouraged to report any incidents of aggression and to not assume the school already knows about them.

Schools are a great environment for children to learn and make friends. But it is also where they experience aggressions targeted towards them like bullying, harassment and hazing.

We discuss what steps parents and schools should take when these behaviors are reported with Curtiss Reed, executive director of the Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity, Geoff Lawrence, associate principal of Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon, and Vermont's Secretary of Education Rebecca Holcombe.

The Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity has published a pamphlet for parents on this topic. The Human Rights Commission has compiled a list of the Vermont state laws pertaining to bullying and harassing. And the Agency of Education provides Safe Schools Resources.

Also on the program, when someone spots brown kaymen, pink-kneed tarantulas or Burmese pythons in Vermont, who gets called? It's Warden Chad Barrett and we talk to him about some of the exotic animals he's had to deal with.

Broadcast live on Thursday, September 3, 2015, at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
