Lt. Gov. Phil Scott, second from left, and Gov. Peter Shumlin, second from right, take the "ice bucket challenge" on Aug. 14, 2014. The challenge is aimed at raising funds to fight ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Maybe you have poured a bucket of ice on your head, or maybe you have just seen videos of friends doing it. Either way, the viral "ice bucket challenge" has accomplished its goal this summer: raising awareness and money for ALS, a fatal illness that was little-known a month ago.

On the next Vermont Edition, we learn about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and the devastating effect it has on the human nervous system, and about the intense level of care patients require. Our guests are are neurologist Dr. Rup Tandan of Fletcher Allen Health Care and the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and Lisa Anderson, Vermont care services coordinator for the ALS Association of Northern New England.

Also in the program, results as we know them from Tuesday's Primary Election. VPR's Bob Kinzel explains the outcomes of the Republican primaries for U.S. House and governor, and how write-in campaigns affected the outcomes of two races.

And, we read from your messages to the program.

Broadcast live on Wed., Aug. 27 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
