What Makes A Community Sustainable?

What makes a community sustainable, and how is that word even defined? Those questions are explored with deep examples from the City of Burlington in the book, Sustainable Communities: Creating A Durable Local Economy. Thursday on Vermont Edition we talk with one of the authors, Bruce Seifer, about how Burlington has worked to develop its economy, environment and culture over the last 30 years.

Also in the program, singer Rachel Ries. Her new album, Ghost of a Gardener, is a personal exploration of her connections to nature, family and sense of place, including her new home in Vermont.

And, we shovel through the science of snow at the Montshire Museum in Norwich. Kids there recently investigated how ice and snow behave and react to different environmental factors.

Broadcast live on Thurs., Feb. 20 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
