Welcome To The Common Core

Ric Cengeri

Schools across Vermont are in the process of implementing the Common Core State Standards.

Parents and students, say goodbye to the NECAPs and say hello to Common Core. A new standard for teaching and evaluating math and English is being introduced around the country, including in Vermont.

Pat Fitzsimmons, Common Core Implementation Coordinator for the Vermont Agency of Education, discusses how Common Core changes the standards currently in place, how they’ll be implemented and discuss some of the criticisms of the program.

This week on Vermont Edition we’re also shining a spotlight on the work that people from our region are doing in foreign countries. We’re calling the project, ‘Vermonters Without Borders’ and today we hear from Stephen Major, a large animal veterinarian in West Chesterfield, New Hampshire. Inspired by his daughter’s work with the Peace Corps in Uganda, Major decided to go to the East African Country himself, and work with farmers on the basics of veterinary care.

Plus, Caledonia Spirits in Hardwick recently received an international award for its Bar Hill Gin, We visit the distillery for a look at how it’s made.

Broadcast Tuesday, December 17 at noon and 7 p.m.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
One in five Vermonters is considered elderly. But what does being elderly even mean — and what do Vermonters need to know as they age? I’m looking into how aging in Vermont impacts living essentials such as jobs, health care and housing. And also how aging impacts the stuff of life: marriage, loss, dating and sex.
