A diagnosis and prescription for problems like ADHD have become commonplace, but one leading child psychiatrist in our region argues that temperament and behavior is a spectrum, not an all-or-nothing diagnosis.
On Vermont Edition we talk with child psychiatrist Dr. David Rettew about his new book, “Child Temperament: New Thinking About the Boundary Between Traits and Illness.” In it, he cautions against a trend of medicalizing and over-treating behavioral conditions in kids. Rettew is director of the Pediatric Psychiatry Clinic at Fletcher Allen and associate professor of Psychiatry at the UVM College of Medicine.

Also in the program, we congratulate the Vermont Teacher of the Year, Northfield Middle High School’s Luke Foley. We’ll learn how his approach to alternative programs distinguishes him in the classroom and in the field work he does with students.
And, a profile of another Vermont teacher receiving high praise: Lisa Bianconi is a semi-finalist for the first-ever Grammy Award for music educator. VPR’s Susan Keese reports on how she’s inspiring music students at Kurn Hattin Homes for Children in Westminster.
