Young Writers Project: Heaven or Hell

Avery says she usually writes when she's feeling emotional. "This was written one time when I was just sort of thinking, and questioning things I know to be true. I took inspiration from life and death for this poem.”

Heaven or Hell
by Avery McLean
Grade Eight, Lake Champlain Waldorf School

And here we are again.
Standing at the edge of a precipice.
Watching how the world accepts us now.
Realizing how decorated fate must be.

Here I am again.
Knowing that I am stuck here
Eternally.
For the time they call
"Forever".
Knowing also that I am fading to a wisp of soul,
And watching you disappear someplace.
Heaven or hell, they say.
Well, I am beyond both,
Yet stuck here,
In between the lines of my ordinary life.

Frustrated at how I was always striving to succeed, and now I know success is not to win.
And you, the one who always mattered most,
(You were always charmingly less than perfect),
Have left me here.
Not to die, but to fade.

So there we were again,
At the edge of that precipice.
Just inches from the edge.
Choosing between heaven, or hell,
But never given the option to
Fade.
