A tense situation in Newport this morning has ended peacefully. Police evacuated a neighborhood after receiving a call early this morning from a person claiming his house was surrounded by 400 police officers. The Air Force may decide as soon as November if the F-35 fighter jet will be based in Vermont. As the Obama administration drafts rules to control carbon emissions from power plants, advocates say the Northeast’s Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative could be a market-based system to follow. State police say about 40 law enforcement officers are attempting to take into custody 20 people for the distribution and sale of illicit drugs in Bennington County.
