The U.S. Senate held its final vote Saturday on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh was nominated by President Donald Trump in July, after Justice Anthony Kennedy announced he was stepping down from the U.S. Supreme Court.
The confirmation hearings for Kavanaugh were held in early September before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which Sen. Patrick Leahy sits on. In the following weeks, allegations of sexual misconduct against Brett Kavanaugh surfaced. Kavanaugh denies these allegations.
Both Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who alleges Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a party in the 1980s, testified under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 27. Kavanaugh's nomination was then voted out of committee, but an FBI investigation was also opened.
About a day after the FBI report was made available to senators, the U.S. Senate held a cloture vote to close debate. That procedural vote on Friday advanced Kavanaugh's nomination by a 51-to-49 margin and set the stage for the final confirmation vote this weekend.
