Vermont Protests Planned In 'National Day Of Solidarity With Standing Rock'

Hundreds of protesters are expected to rally in front of the Montpelier TD Bank Tuesday to show their opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The TD Bank in Montpelier is just one of the branches being targeted as part of a nationwide "Day of Solidarity With Standing Rock."

Lillian Shen is one of the local organizers.

Shen says TD Bank is one of 17 banks that have loaned billions of dollars to build the pipeline designed to run across North Dakota.

“[The protest] is a demand for TD Bank to stop financing the Dakota Access Pipeline” she told VPR over the phone.

“The pipeline was put in its present route in Native lands which were agreed to be controlled by a Treaty in 1851 called the Fort Laramie Treaty, with the US Government and the pipeline is crossing some of those lands” she said.

The Montpelier rally starts Tuesday at noon.

Later Tuesday afternoon there will be a demonstration at the Brattleboro TD Bank as well as many others around the country. Another protest, sponsored by the group Rights & Democracy, is planned for the Burlington TD Bank branch on Wednesday.
