Burlington Voters Approve Ballot Items Seen As Critical To Proposed Mall Redevelopment

Burlington voters approved two ballots items Tuesday that bring the city one step closer to a major downtown redevelopment.

Ballot items 3 and 4 were seen as critical to the proposed redevelopment of Burlington's downtown mall.

Item 3 changed the zoning in the area, allowing for building up to 160 feet, and ballot item 4 approved the use of tax increment financing to pay for public infrastructure improvements.

Democratic Mayor Miro Weinberger said he's very excited about moving forward with the downtown redevelopment.

And he said even though the measures didn't pass by a landslide, he hopes people would stay involved in the public process.

“I’m very aware that this was by no means a unanimous decision,” said Weinberger. “I hope that people who were looking for a different outcome tonight can see in this result [that] their work, their attention, their scrutiny of this project has made the project far better, has made this zoning policy that we just passed better and there is opportunity to make more progress tomorrow."

Voters also approved bonds for capital plan projects and improvements public water systems.
