Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president Tuesday.
“Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process, and I congratulate her for that,” Sanders said at a Clinton rally in Portsmouth, N.H. Tuesday morning.
“I have come here today not to talk about the past but to focus on the future,” he said. “That future will be shaped more by what happens on November 8 in voting booths across our nation than by any other event in the world. I have come here to make it as clear as possible as to why I am endorsing Hillary Clinton and why she must become our next president.”
Sanders, in his remarks, outlined the implications of November’s election.
“Hillary Clinton understands that we must fix an economy in America that is rigged and that sends almost all new wealth and income to the top 1 percent,” Sanders said, before drawing a contrast with Republican Donald Trump.
“He believes that states should have the right to lower the minimum wage or even abolish the concept of the minimum wage altogether. If Donald Trump is elected, we will see no increase in the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour – a starvation wage,” Sanders said.
Before endorsing Clinton, Sanders negotiated to include some of his major issues into the Democratic Party platform. The party’s official platform now includes a $15 per hour minimum, tuition-free education at public state colleges, and limits on hydraulic “fracking” in natural gas drilling. Sanders also tried to get the party to formally oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership, but that was ultimately not included in the platform.
