Cece Bell, winner of this year's Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award, will be in Montpelier on Wednesday to accept the honor. Bell is author of the graphic memoir, El Deafo. The ceremony will be held at Montpelier High School, starting at 6 p.m.
El Deafo tells the story of how Cece lost her hearing as a preschooler when she contracted meningitis. The graphic memoir, in which the characters are depicted as rabbits, goes on to chronicle her move to a new town, her experiences using a classroom hearing aid called the Phonic Ear, her first crush and other milestones in Cece's young life.
Among those attending the ceremony will be Vermont students in grades four through eight who voted in the state's annual children's choice middle grade book award. Bell will be signing books and meeting with young fans during the event.
Attendees might also do well to bring along any Origami Yoda books in their collections. Tom Angleberger, author of that popular series, is married to Bell and organizers hinted he might make the trip to Vermont with his wife.
