FairPoint Takes Over E-911 System

Vermont’s E-911 system is officially in the hands of FairPoint Communications.

Last year, the state signed a five year $11.2 million contract with the company to take over E-911 services from Colorado-based Intrado, Inc.

Interim E-911 Executive Director Barbara Neal says the transition took place on July 29.

According to Neal “things are going well” and voice calls and text messages are functioning properly.

Neal says the first week is a planned ‘soak period’ in which all E-911 traffic is being routed through the FairPoint system, but Intrado’s infrastructure remains in place in case its needed.

Last year problems with the system were blamed on both companies and prompted a request by the E-911 board for an FCC investigation.

A six-hour Thanksgiving weekend outage which affected the E-911 system due to FairPoint equipment failure is currently being investigated by the Vermont Public Service Board.
