South Burlington Teachers Vote To Strike

South Burlington teachers plan to strike starting next Tuesday, October 14 if they are unable to reach a contract agreement with the school board before then.

The lead negotiator for the South Burlington Educators Association announced Tuesday that the roughly 200 teachers voted overwhelmingly in support of the strike.

"We didn't want to take this step," said Eric Stone, the negotiator. "But after the board decided to walk rather than bargain with us last night, we have had enough of remaining the only teachers in Chittenden County without a contract. We know that this is a drastic step, but this board needs to know we are united."

Stone, a teacher at South Burlington High School, said teachers still plan to picket this week.

He said teachers didn't have any plans to meet with the board as of Tuesday afternoon, but that they hope the board will call to schedule meetings soon.

"It's still our commitment to meet them at the negotiating table and reach a fair and reasonable settlement," he said."
