Shaw's Warns Customers Of Possible Security Breach

The parent company of the Shaw’s Supermarket chain says Vermont customers are among those affected by an ‘attempted criminal intrusion’ that sought to obtain their credit and debit card information.

According to a news release from AB Acquisition LLC, the discovery of malware used to illegally capture customer information is the second such incident in recent weeks.

The company operates stores under a variety of names, including Albertson’s, ACME, Jewel-Osco, Star Markets and Shaw’s.

The potential breach affects customers in 21 states, including Vermont.

According to the news release the malware may have compromised account numbers, cardholder names and other customer information.

AB Acquisition says it is not clear at this point whether any information was actually stolen.

The company says it has notified federal law enforcement officials of the latest incident, which apparently took place in late August or early September.  It says major payment card firms have also been notified.

The company is encouraging customers to monitor their credit reports and check credit and debit card statements.

A company spokesperson declined further comment.

There are 19 Shaw’s stores in Vermont.
