Update: Water Main Break In Waitsfield

Waitsfield Elementary School is closed today, and the entire Waitsfield water system is under a boil water notice, after a water main broke on Thursday.

Update at 12:36 p.m. on Sept. 5, 2014: According to Waitsfield Town Administrator Valerie Capels, the latest projection for restoration of water is by 3 p.m. A temporary water line is being installed to get water restored as quickly as possible. Once the temporary line is connected, the system south of the repair will be flushed. Attention will then shift to the permanent repair.

Original post: All water customers south of Tremblay Road have been without water since late Thursday afternoon. The problem occurred when a contractor for the Vermont Agency of Transportation, working on a Route 100 bridge, drilled through the water main.

Crews worked overnight to repair the damage, but "a complication was encountered" according to a notice sent out by Town Administrator Valerie Capels. She said they hope to have service restored by late Friday morning. The water system operator will disinfect and flush the lines, once the repair is complete.

"Because of the nature of the break and that water lines have been without flowing water for a period of time, customers are advised to run a faucet or outside tap for 5 to 10 minutes to flush any sediment that may have settled in the service lines once the water has been restored," Capels stated. "The location and severity of the water main break will require the entire water system to be chlorinated for a period of time until tests results show no potentially harmful bacteria are present."
