Can You Hear Me Now? GOP Signals Shumlin Cell Coverage Reversal

The Vermont Republican Party seems to have begun its Election 2014 opposition research on Gov. Peter Shumlin.

In a release Monday, the party’s political director criticized Shumlin for saying recently that he “never promised cell service to Vermont because I knew that we couldn’t get that done by 2013 or 2014.”

But as the GOP pointed out today, he did. In his inaugural address in 2011, Shumlin said he was launching a new initiative “to deliver by 2013 my promise of high-speed internet access and cell service to every corner of our state.”

As 2014 draws near, both of these goals have fallen short. Broadband access is nearly universal – the state says 99 percent of locations have broadband service – but cell coverage is still lacking in many areas.
