Play Tells Stories Of Childbirth

The cast of "Birth"

A play being produced in Burlington brings theatergoers face-to-face with issues surrounding childbirth.

Birth” is based on nearly 100 interviews that playwright Karen Brody conducted with mothers across America.

She distilled those interviews to tell the stories of eight women and their birth experiences.

Director Trisha Denton says childbirth is often a "taboo" subject for conversation, and many women are left in the dark about what the experience is like.

She believes that the process has become "medicalized",  and that women need to know there are alternative birthing experiences.

"Birth" is being presented at Burlington's Main Street Landing Theater November 8 and 9.

VPR's Neal Charnoff talks with Denton about the play.

Neal was a reporter and VPR's All Things Considered host from 2001 to 2014. He joined VPR in 1996, hosting VPR's jazz programming, including live performances from the VPR studios and the Discover Jazz Festival. Prior to VPR, Neal was a programmer and host for WNCS in Montpelier and WDEV in Waterbury. He holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College.
