NEK Classical Series Celebrates 25 Years

The Northeast Kingdom Classical Series is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special concert Sunday afternoon in St. Johnsbury.

A number of Vermont musicians will gather to kick off the season.

Montpelier pianist Michael Arnowitt, who played at the first concert 25 years ago, is returning to perform in this Sunday's program.

The concert will also feature The Heliand Consort and members of the Craftsbury Chamber Players.

Leslie Gensburg is a co-founder of the series.

She says audience and donor support has been strong, thanks in part to the classical music presence on VPR.

Gensburg says the series is maintained by an all-volunteer staff, who are committed to keeping ticket prices affordable.

The 25th anniversary concert will take place Sunday, November 3rd at the South Congregational Church in  St. Johnsbury.

VPR's Neal Charnoff talks with Gensburg about the series.

Neal was a reporter and VPR's All Things Considered host from 2001 to 2014. He joined VPR in 1996, hosting VPR's jazz programming, including live performances from the VPR studios and the Discover Jazz Festival. Prior to VPR, Neal was a programmer and host for WNCS in Montpelier and WDEV in Waterbury. He holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College.
