The Fair Haven Police Department is in high demand -- but not just from residents of Fair Haven. Two neighboring municipalities have recently inquired about partnering with the Fair Haven Police, for policing and administrative services. Requests from both the Town of Castleton and the Village of Poultney were discussed at the Sept. 30 meeting of the Fair Haven Select Board.
Fair Haven Town Manager Herb Durfee told the board Castleton is interested in sharing the services of Fair Haven's Chief of Police, William Humphries. Meeting minutes state:
The Castleton Police Chief is retiring. As such, the Castleton Town Manager approached Durfee to see if the Town would be interested in sharing through contract the administrative position of Police Chief. The two existing police departments would continue to serve as separate entities but would share the chief services.
The minutes also show Town Manager Durfee had been contacted by the Poultney village manager about contracting for police coverage in Poultney.
Durfee reported Poultney’s inquiry would be to provide police coverage via an inter-municipal services contract similar to the Benson contract but probably for a greater number of hours. Poultney is looking for better response time then they currently receive from the State Police.
After some discussion, the Fair Haven Select Board agreed to give both requests further consideration.
