St. Johnsbury To Sell Abandoned House For $1

St. Johnsbury is planning to sell a dilapidated vacant house for $1 so it can be demolished and a new house built on the site.

The town acquired the St. Mary Street property after it failed to sell at a tax sale.

The Burlington-based Vermont Housing Finance Agency offered to buy the property, demolish the house, build an affordable single family house, and sell it.

The Caledonian Record reports the selectmen unanimously supported the proposal with the stipulation the agency must construct the new home within three years.

Select Board Chairman Kevin Oddy says the program is a viable way for the community to add to its tax roll and erase an eyesore.
