Sheriff's Deputy Dies In Car Accident

Vermont State Police say a 22-year-old off-duty sheriff's deputy from Barre is dead following a single-car crash on Interstate 89 in Waterbury.

The driver was identified as Michael Zemanek, an Orange County sheriff's deputy and part-time officer with the Northfield Police Department.

Police say that one minute before midnight Wednesday Zemanek's south-bound car crossed the median, hit the guardrails in the northbound lane and then re-crossed the median, coming to rest along the guardrails in the south-bound lane.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, but police say speed does not appear to have been a factor.
