The chief of the Burlington Police says the department will hire an outside investigator to look into whether any department rules or policies were violated in the case of an off-duty officer who's facing a charge of drunken driving.
Deputy Chief Andi Higbee of Colchester was arrested for drunken driving early Sunday and later released on a citation.
Higbee, of Colchester, was pulled over by Vermont State Police in Sheldon.
Schirling says Higbee has been put on paid administrative leave. He says the department will work with the city attorney, Human Resources director, and Police Commission if needed on the matter.
Higbee pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in 1999 while he was a sergeant. The Burlington Free Press reported that he was demoted to corporal for four months.
