Emergency Surcharge On Employers Lifted In N.H.

In New Hampshire, employers are getting a break on the taxes they pay to fund unemployment benefits.

An emergency surcharge on employers is being eliminated. That will save them nearly $30 million dollars next year.

The action is in response to a recommendation by the Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council.

The surcharge will be lowered starting in October. It is the second surcharge removed since the economy began improving. The first tax reduction was last October.

The state increased employer tax rates to ensure money was available to pay benefits and made other changes to the unemployment insurance program to weather the recession.

The council also recommended increasing some jobless benefit levels. The Legislature would have to approve a benefit increase.
