GMO Labeling Activists To Canvas In Windham County

A Vermont consumer and environmental group has 60 canvassers in Windham County this week to raise money and promote the group's campaign supporting labeling of foods with genetically modified ingredients.

The Vermont Public Interest Research Group's 60-member team is camping at Fort Dummer State Park in Guilford and making day trips from there the county.

The marquee issue for VPIRG this summer is GMO labeling legislation that passed the House this past spring and which it wants to see pass the Senate in the second-half of the Legislature's two-year session, which begins in January.

Supporters say people have a right to know what's in their food. Opponents, including the biotech industry, say there's no difference between genetically modified and conventional food, so labels aren't necessary.
