An effort to rebuild a 142-year-old building damaged by fire in Brattleboro, is closer to fruition.
It's been two years since a fire heavily damaged the historic Brooks House, built in 1871.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports Bob Stevens, one of the investors, told the selectboard Tuesday the budget is finally balanced and the group feels a deal is very close.
The board unanimously agreed to loan $50,000 to Mesabi LLC, the corporation formed to help raise $23 million needed to complete the deal. The town has already agreed to loan $100,000 out of the Community Development Block Grant fund.
The Community College of Vermont and Vermont Technical College say they want space in the building. The building also is expected to include apartments and businesses.
