Supporters Rally To Block Deportation Of Activist

A man at the center of the push to get Vermont drivers' licenses for farmworkers in the country illegally now is getting support from his fellow activists in his battle against deportation.

Twenty-three-year-old Danilo Lopez has been at the Statehouse frequently during the past two years, pushing the legislation that Gov. Peter Shumlin signed into law last week.

Lopez was a passenger in a car whose driver was stopped for speeding in 2011. State police turned him and his cousin over to immigration authorities. Lopez' cousin since has returned to Mexico, but Lopez has stayed in the United States and has become involved with the group Migrant Justice.

He's been ordered to leave the country by July 5, but other members of the group have launched a letter-writing campaign.
