A psychiatrist says a Winooski man shot and wounded by police after allegedly assaulting two police officers is not mentally competent to stand trial.
The opinion of a psychiatrist was noted Wednesday during a competency hearing for 35-year-old Isaac Sage in Burlington.
A judge will later determine if Sage is competent for trial.
At the hearing, Judge Kevin Griffin lifted the $10,000 bail against Sage, but ordered him to remain hospitalized.
The Burlington Free Press reports Griffin said that he didn't want Sage in jail, but he didn't want him released into the community.
Prosecutors say Sage had been living in a group home before assaulting the officers who tried to subdue him with a stun gun April 25, but ended up shooting him in the leg.
