Crews are planning to re-open a section of railroad track after three freight cars loaded with corn derailed and crashed into the Passumpsic River.
No one was hurt when the Washington County Railroad freight cars derailed about 6 p.m. Monday in Barnet and rolled down a steep bank into the river.
Railroad officials said the southbound train was hauling the load of corn from Canada when the derailment happened about a quarter mile south of the East Barnet Hydro Station.
Gerry Racette, vice president for business development for Vermont Rail Systems, which operates the line, tells the Caledonian-Record the investigation into the cause could possibly involve the Federal Railroad Administration.
The track was expected to be re-opened by Wednesday. A crane will remove the trains Friday.
