New Book Focuses On Long-Distance Hiking

A new book by Vermonters Robert and Martha Manning argues that long-distance walking is a profound way to see the world, stimulate thinking, and improve heath.

In "Walking Distance: Extraordinary Hikes for Ordinary People", the Mannings chronicle their journeys and provide detailed recommendations, from Vermont’s own Long Trail, to South Africa’s Cape Wineland’s Walk, to Peru’s Inca Trail.

They quote comedian Steven Wright as saying, "Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time".

Except they amend that to say, "Everywhere is walking distance if you TAKE the time".

Robert Manning is a Professor at UVM who teaches the history and management of national parks.  Martha Manning is an artist who practices in Burlington.

VPR's Neal Charnoff speaks with Robert and Martha Manning about their book.
