Police Say Wallingford Robbery Was Staged

Vermont State Police say a convenience store manager and her boyfriend staged an armed robbery last month to cover missing funds that she embezzled from the Wallingford Smart Shop.

Kelly English reported that a man robbed her at knife point, forced her into a bathroom and took the store's bank deposit bags on March 26. She said the suspect then stole her vehicle and fled.

Police said Thursday that the investigation determined that the robbery was staged.

Police say English had been embezzling from the store's deposits and that she and her boyfriend, William Shaw, staged the robbery to cover more than $9,000 that she had stolen. Police say Shaw told investigators they used the money to support a prescription drug addiction.

The couple is expected to be arraigned today.
