A Williston teenager who pushed successfully last year for legislation requiring Vermont kids to have CPR training before graduating high school is being honored with a national award from the American Heart Association.
Tommy Watson launched his crusade after seeing an elderly man die at a school soccer game. As an eighth-grader, he made multiple trips to the Statehouse to lobby lawmakers for passage of the bill requiring CPR training before high school graduation.
He gave CPR training to Gov. Peter Shumlin, Lieutenant Gov. Phil Scott and lawmakers.
The Heart Association announced last week that Tommy Watson had been named its Youth-Advocate of the Year.
