All are invited on September 14 in Calais, VT, for the first of three Sunday afternoon readings given by a pair of Vermont writers for this fall’s series, WORDS OUT LOUD: Knowing by Heart, when we’ll welcome presenters Gary Clark reading poetry, and Helen Whybrow reading from her memoir The Salt Stones: Seasons of a Shepherds Life (Milkweed Editions, 2025).

Filled with thought-provoking poetry and prose spoken from the—and sometimes by—heart, the WORDS OUT LOUD readings on September 14, 21, and 28 will be followed by receptions down the road at the Kent amidst the art on display for Art at the Kent’s 2025 exhibit, “HOLDING: Mementos Kept, Memories Kindled,” where attendees may meet and chat with the authors and a selection of books will be available in the old General Store of the Kent.

The Words Out Loud readings take place at the Old West Church and aim to begin sharply at 3:00.
