Budget Debate In The Midst Of Nickname Controversy In South Burlington

Patti Daniels

The South Burlington school board presented a school budget draft during an April meeting. We're talking about the debate over the budget and how it's become wrapped up in a controversy over changing the high school's nickname.

South Burlington voters have rejected two school budgets amidst the ongoing debate over the changing of the high school's "rebel" nickname. They'll vote on a third in June.

We're looking at the budget negotiations, the name controversy, and just how closely they've become tied together. And we'll talk about next steps for the school and the community.

We're joined by Nicole DeSmet, who covers education and South Burlington for the Burlington Free Press. Also by South Burlington school board chair Elizabeth Fitzgerald and South Burlington school district superintendent David Young.

We'll also hear from Stacey Savage, who is active the "rebel alliance" group that opposes the nickname change and has inspired opposition to proposed school budgets.

Broadcast live on Monday, May 15, 2017 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
