Vermont will elect a new attorney general on Nov. 8, 2016. Two candidates for attorney general – Republican Deb Bucknam, left, and Democrat TJ Donovan, right – debated each other on 'Vermont Edition' on Oct. 25, 2016.";s:

This week, Vermont Edition brings you election debates for three statewide offices.  On Tuesday, the leading candidates for attorney general meet in a live, face-to-face debate.

The attorney general is the state's top law enforcement officer. Criminal cases, consumer protection, enforcing the state's laws and defending the state in court is some of the work done by the Attorney General's Office.

Republican Deb Bucknam and Democrat TJ Donovan will debate each other over the issues, their qualifications and their competing visions for the office. Bucknam is an attorney from Walden, and Donovan is the Chittenden County state's attorney.

Topics discussed in this debate include:

  • Opiates
  • Marijuana
  • Officer-involved shootings
  • Private, out-of-state prisons
  • Racial bias in policing
  • Hate speech
  • Campaign finance
  • Outside legal experts
  • What candidates would bring to the office
