VPR Cafe: Refreshing Maple Drinks

Ryan Mercer
/
Burlington Free Press
TreTap is a new, Vermont-made drink using 'maple water' lightly flavored with blueberry, cranberry or cucumber. The water is a byproduct of maple syrup production, what's left after sugar is removed from the maple sap.

Making maple syrup generates gallons and gallons of water, most of which goes down the drain. Now, resourceful Vermonters are using that water to produce refreshing drinks.

Candace Page, who writes for The Burlington Free Press, tells us about these new creations, and host RicCengeri gives each of them a taste. You can read more about maple innovations in Candace's Free Press article.

The VPR Cafe is produced in collaboration with The Burlington Free Press.

Broadcast on Sunday August 10, 2014, at 10:50 a.m.

Franny was VPR's Director of Programming & Production.
Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
