Impeachment

AP
President Nixon waves goodbye from the steps of his helicopter outside the White House Aug. 9, 1976, after he gave a farewell address to members of the White House staff.

Forty years ago today, two-and-half-years into his second term, Richard M. Nixon became the first American President to resign his post. Gerald Ford, who succeeded Nixon, referred to this time as “our long national nightmare.”

Had Nixon not resigned, he almost assuredly would have been impeached. Two U.S. Presidents have met that fate – Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.

Vermont Edition spoke with Kenneth Davis, author of the popular “Don’t Know Much About…” series for a history and civics lesson on impeachment.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
